Keeping the weather out, and the heat in.
Apart from the unglazed windows allowing in wind and rain, the roof on the East side of the barn had a traditional covering of stone slabs. Most of the time it worked fine, with just the odd drip in heavy rain, but when snow blew in from the East it got in through the gaps and gave us a lovely winter scene inside! As soon as the scaffolding was up, D A Roofing set to work stripping the roof and rebuilding, replacing the sandstone and slate covering like for like but adding insulation, breathable felt and new Velux windows to give us a warm, dry space with much needed daylight from above.
